Artist Statement
I am interested in exploring themes that cut across different cultural, temporal, and personal contexts in order to arrive at a universal understanding of the human condition. I observe, incorporate satire, and create art that addresses these core aspects of humanity. My layered multimedia work metaphorically connects multicultural, generational, and intimate human experiences into one expression.
My work is both socially engaged and informed by a sense of humour or irony. By using satire to explore serious or complex themes, I can engage my audience in an intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant way.
Each sculpture being a puzzle also speaks to the process-oriented nature of my artistic practice. By researching my subject matter and juxtaposing figuration with abstraction, I can create works that are multi-layered and rich with meaning. The fact that the work remains enigmatic to some degree suggests that I am comfortable with leaving some aspects of the work open to interpretation, encouraging my audience to engage with the work more actively and participatory way.
Finally, my enjoyment of working through impediments to reaching meaningful outcomes speaks to perseverance and dedication to my artwork. By embracing the challenges inherent in creating art, I can push myself creatively and arrive at personally meaningful and impactful outcomes for my audience.
